Neighborhood & Surrounding Areas
Even before the Civil War, The John J. Shillito Company--what we now know as The Lofts at Shillito Place, was a primary destination for the gentry of Cincinnati. Then as now, Shillito's style and ambience befits its inhabitants.
Originally situated on Fourth Street, Shillito looked northward for a new and grander home soon after the war. In 1876, James L. McLaughlin was commissioned to design a "palace of retailing" that would equal any in New York or Boston .
McLaughlin created a grand structure in the Commercial Style at the southwest corner of Seventh and Race Streets. The new Shillito's was distinguished by a sweeping staircase and a glorious octagonal atrium crowned by an enormous skylight.
